On Saturday, February 11, the Confucius Institute at the University of Utah (CIUU) held a teacher training titled “Increasing Student’s Language Proficiency.” In total, 75 Chinese educators who teach in the state of Utah came to attend the training
Utah Chinese Dual Language Immersion Director Stacy Lyon and four experienced local Chinese teachers workshopped all morning to share their valuable experiences with teaching at a variety of grade levels. Mrs. Lyon opened the workshop with her lecture on “Using Data to Set Up Learning Goals and to Guide Instruction.” Local teacher Marty Chen followed with a speech on “Learning Through the Five Senses.” This was followed by breakout sessions separated by age groups to help teachers create strategies for implementing curriculum at all different levels.

This February’s training was one of many that the Confucius Institute regularly offers sponsored by Hanban and College Board. CIUU Core Teacher Shin Chi Fame Kao visits Chinese DLI classrooms across the state every year to identify issues, then designs these regular trainings to help teachers from China succeed in teaching American students. CIUU is grateful for the support it receives from both local schools and the Utah State Board of Education and proud to help serve Chinese education in our state.
