On December 2, the Confucius Institute at the University of Utah (CIUU) hosted a teacher training workshop. The theme of this workshop was “Building a student centered classroom to increase learning motivation and language proficiency.” 65 Chinese teachers from school districts throughout the state attended.
Shinchi Famekao, the CIUU outreach coordinator and Dual Language Immersion (DLI) master teacher directed the training, assisted by Utah DLI teacher Marty Chen. Together, they helped teachers understand how to create opportunities for realistic language practice in the classroom and increase student speaking proficiency. With this knowledge, teachers have the tools to shift the focus of their classrooms to the needs of their students.

During the workshop, teachers were split into groups according to their grade levels to attend breakout sessions. In these sessions, experienced Utah DLI teachers were invited to instruct them in subject-specific activities and teaching techniques. Using classroom enrichment techniques and live demonstrations, teachers were able to learn the theory behind running a classroom.

The training also included a rotation activity that allowed teachers to become students and experience classroom activities as students might. Teachers broke into groups to rotate through five different centers, each showcasing different styles of classroom management, activities, and examples of how to guide students through lessons.

Supporting Utah’s DLI program continues to be a main focus as CIUU works to increasing Chinese language learning throughout the state of Utah. To make the DLI program strong, it is crucial to have qualified teachers and well-developed lessons, and CIUU teacher training workshops help build that foundation.
